Manotick is a lovely community in the south of Ottawa that has a small-town feel and a beautiful rural setting.  Surrounded by rolling hills, green fields, and the Rideau river, this area is perfect for home buyers who like to be away from a busy city and enjoy idyllic country life.  Manotick real estate is thriving and the town is only 25 km away from downtown Ottawa, making for an easy commute.

Manotick prides itself on being known as “the vibrant village” and that’s certainly the feel one gets when visiting here.  Community founder Moss Kent Dickinson named the area Manotick back in 1859.  The name means “Island in the River,” in Objibway and the town feels somewhat like a small island surrounded by the Rideau river. The main part of town boasts a village-like feel that always has a celebration going on.  The community may be small, but the town pride is big and Manotick real estate is certainly on the rise.

Here are a few reasons why you should consider purchasing real estate in Manotick. Or maybe you’re here because you want to learn about Manotick. You’re in for a treat – this lovely community is a gem!

Things to do in Manotick

Manotick has a lot of community-sponsored events, like pancake breakfasts and farmer’s markets.  They also celebrate Dickinson Days the first weekend in June, honoring the city’s founder.  There’s a parade, open vendors, pioneer re-enactments and more.

In January, the village has a Shiverfest festival where you can learn about the sport of curling, eat food and listen to music.

April has an art festival, August features a ‘taste of Manotick,’ show, and October sees a harvest festival at Watson’s Mill. I’m sure by now, you’re convinced of the charm and long time values that exist in Manotick.  It’s really a wonderful place for a getaway trip and, I think, a great place to call home.

Where to visit in Manotick

Manotick is home to a big bed and breakfast community (which makes sense, because an old fashioned town is the perfect setting for a cozy bed and breakfast!).   You can also pop by and see Watson’s Mill, an iconic landmark in the area and the only working museum in Ottawa.  This mill is one of the only grist mills still functioning in North America today and you can even buy stone ground whole wheat flour at the museum. You can also take a casual walk next to the Rideau river which lines the city.  Or you can fish or relax along the riverfront.  Some parts of the river are used for tubing in the summer and ice skating in the winter.

Why Manotick real estate is on the rise

This community lies just outside of Ottawa, but it can feel like an entire world away.  Here there are spacious green lawns and beautiful sprawling homes.  The area enjoys four seasons each year and friendly neighborhoods. The area of Manotick is one of the older city settlements near Ottawa, enjoying both a rich and prosperous history.  It was changed forever when highway 16, the only road from Ottawa to Prescott, was paved in the 1920’s.

Today, Manotick stands as an ode to history and strives to preserve historical landmarks in the area.  Manotick locals are also the ones who vote on new housing projects and developments and like having control of how many homes are built in the area.  This could be a huge bonus for a buyer who wants to live in the country but doesn’t want it to get too crowded either.   If you like living outside the city, desire to have a close-knit community of friends and neighbors, and want to raise your children near wonderful schools in safe areas, Manotick could be the ideal location for you.
